The map says the landscape is understood. The ground says otherwise.

Maps decay. This post is about what happens when someone notices.

Every technology portfolio has four roles meant to close that gap. Enterprise Architect. Solution Architect. Technical Architect. Business Architect. Different altitudes. Different lenses. The same territory.

That team almost never forms.

Instead you get four individuals with adjacent titles, different sponsors, different metrics. The EA produces artefacts. The SA responds to projects. The TA solves the problem immediately in front of them. The Business Architect translates between a business that stopped asking and technology that stopped explaining.

Nobody owns the gap.

When someone sees it clearly enough to escalate, the escalation travels the chain. At each stop the concern is received. At each stop nothing moves. Not because nobody understands. Because acting costs political capital. Staying still doesn't.

The mandate exists. The authority exists. Leadership won't spend it.

The person who raised it is left holding a concern the structure was designed to resolve.

The gap closes nobody. The structure absorbed the signal and produced no response.

The map kept being used. The decision kept moving forward.
